As you know, our supports are made of wood . This week, we went to our supplier to choose new species in order to offer you new supports . So let's take a look at the different types of wood. There are many different types of wood, each with characteristics in terms of color, texture , density , hardness , and resistance to wear and deformation . Here are some of the most common types of wood The oak Oak is a hard, dense wood that is native to Europe, Asia, and North America . It is one of the most commonly used woods in furniture, flooring, timber framing, and wine barrels because of its hardness, durability, and natural beauty. Oak varies in color , from pale yellow to dark brown, depending on the species and region of origin. It often has distinctive markings, such as knots, which give it a natural, rustic appearance . Oak is also known for its resistance to impact, scratches, and wear , making it suitable for use in high-traffic environments. Additionally, oak is often used in the construction of wine barrels because of its ability to impart subtle and complex flavors to the wines aged in them. The oak tree is also a symbol of strength and longevity in many cultures. The pine Pine is a soft, lightweight wood that is native to many parts of the world, including North America, Europe, and Asia . It is often used in furniture, flooring, framing, wall coverings, and wood paneling because of its light weight and ease of work. Pine varies in colour , ranging from pale yellow to orange-brown depending on the species and region of origin. Pine is an easy wood to work, making it suitable for use in woodworking projects where flexibility is required. However, due to its softness, pine is less resistant to impact, scratches and wear than hardwoods such as oak or beech. Pine is also known for its resistance to weathering and rot, making it suitable for use in exterior construction projects such as wall cladding and decks. Maple Maple is a hard, dense wood that is native to the Northern Hemisphere, particularly North America and Asia. It is often used in furniture, flooring, wall paneling, and children's toys because of its natural beauty and strength. Maple has a light, uniform color , ranging from white to golden beige depending on the species and region of origin. Knots and veins are generally absent, giving maple a smooth, elegant appearance. Maple wood is impact and wear resistant as well as stain resistant and easy to clean, making it suitable for use in high traffic environments. Maple is also valued for its ability to be worked with precision and to hold its shape. Additionally, maple is often used as an ornamental wood in carving and marquetry in high-end woodworking projects. The birch Birch wood is a light, relatively hard wooden material from the birch tree, which grows primarily in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Birch trees are relatively small, typically reaching a height of 15 to 25 meters, with a trunk diameter of 30 to 60 cm. Birch wood has a white to off-white color , with a fine, uniform texture. It is also known for its ability to be easily worked, carved, and turned. Birch wood is often used in the manufacture of furniture, veneer, plywood, toys, musical instruments, and other wood products. It is also commonly used as fuel for heating and cooking. Its bark can be used in making baskets, bags and clothing as well as to produce birch oil, which is used in cosmetics and skin care products. Birch is also an important tree in traditional healing practices , with the leaves and bark used to treat a variety of ailments. Birch extracts are also used in modern medicine to treat joint and muscle pain, as well as for other medical applications. The cherry tree The cherry tree is native to Asia and Europe . Cherry varieties that produce wood are often grown for fruit production, but the wood is also used in a variety of applications. It is a hard, fine-grained wood that comes from several different types of cherry trees. It has a light pink to deep red color . It is often sought after for its natural beauty and ability to take quality stains and finishes. Cherry wood is also known for its stability and durability. Cherry wood is used for making furniture, cabinets, musical instruments such as guitars and violins, due to its acoustic qualities , toys and other wood products . There are several species of cherry trees, each with slightly different wood characteristics. The most commonly used cherry species for lumber are the American black cherry (Prunus serotina), the choke cherry (Prunus virginiana), and the Japanese cherry (Prunus serrulata). In some cultures, the cherry tree is associated with beauty, grace, and lightness . In Japan , the cherry blossom is a national symbol and is celebrated each year during the spring blooming (hanami). Cherry wood is also associated with love and romance in some cultures. The walnut tree Walnut trees are deciduous trees that grow in many parts of the world , including North America, Europe, and Asia. Walnut trees are often grown commercially for their timber and edible nuts. Walnut wood is a dark brown wood , often with purple or red highlights, hard and dense, often used in the manufacture of high quality furniture, musical instruments, flooring and other wood products . It is resistant to rot and insects. In many cultures, the walnut tree is associated with wisdom, maturity, and strength. Walnuts are also often seen as a symbol of fertility and prosperity. In some traditions, the walnut tree is also associated with protection and healing. Mahogany Mahogany is an evergreen tree that grows in tropical areas of Central and South America. Mahogany is often grown commercially for its timber, although deforestation has reduced the quantities available. It is a dark red to golden brown wood that is used in the manufacture of furniture, musical instruments, boats and other wood products. There are several species of mahogany, each with its own characteristics. American mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni) and Honduran mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) are the two species most commonly used for furniture and musical instruments. In some cultures, mahogany is associated with wealth, prosperity, and nobility . Mahogany is also associated with protection and security. Teak Teak is native to Southeast Asia , including India, Burma, Thailand, and Indonesia. It is often grown on plantations for its timber quality, although deforestation has reduced the quantities available. Teak is a hard, durable wood with a golden to dark brown color, very popular for making garden furniture, boats, flooring and other wood products. It has a natural oil that makes it resistant to water, rot, insects and fungi. Teak is very durable and hard, with a high density and great dimensional stability. There are several species of teak, but Burmese teak (Tectona grandis) is the most commonly used for making furniture and other wood products. In some cultures, teak is associated with prosperity, wisdom, and strength . Teak is also considered a symbol of longevity and durability. Bamboo Bamboo is mainly grown in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa and South America . It grows in a wide variety of soils and can withstand harsh climatic conditions. It can also grow very quickly, up to one meter per day, depending on the species. It can be harvested without damaging the environment, as the plant can regrow after cutting. It is a light, hollow and strong wood, with high resistance to bending, compression and traction. It comes in a wide range of colors, from white to yellow, green and brown, depending on the species and treatment. Bamboo is also environmentally friendly because it can be harvested without killing the plant, and it grows quickly, making it renewable. It is used for a variety of products including furniture, flooring, wall panels, kitchenware, musical instruments, flooring, and garden fencing. Bamboo furniture is often lightweight, durable, and aesthetically appealing. There are over 1000 species of bamboo , each with its own characteristics. The most commonly used species in making bamboo products include Moso bamboo, black bamboo, and golden bamboo. In some Asian cultures, bamboo is considered a symbol of longevity, prosperity, and strength . Bamboo is also associated with flexibility and adaptability, as it can bend without breaking when exposed to strong winds. The ash tree The ash tree is native to Europe and western Asia . It also grows in North America , but is often affected by a fungal disease called "elm disease," which can damage the trees. It is a hard, strong wood, white to pale yellow in color, often used for making furniture, cabinets, musical instruments, flooring, and other wood products such as tool handles and parts for cars and airplanes . There are several species of ash trees, but white ash (Fraxinus americana) and common ash (Fraxinus excelsior) are the most commonly used for making wood products. In some cultures, the ash tree is associated with strength, resilience, and stability . In Norse mythology, the ash tree Yggdrasil is considered the center of the universe and a symbol of stability and life. Rosewood Highly valued for its dark red-brown color, fine grain and pleasant fragrance. It is obtained from different trees belonging to the genera Dalbergia and Aniba, which are mainly native to tropical regions in South America and Asia. It has been used for centuries in the manufacture of furniture , musical instruments, luxury items, and perfumes . However, its popularity has also led to the overexploitation of many species of rosewood trees, resulting in a significant decrease in their numbers in the wild and an increase in prices. So, it is important to note that some types of rosewood are now protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), meaning they cannot be commercially exported without a permit. Sustainable alternatives , such as mahogany or cherry wood , offer similar properties in terms of quality and finish. Iroko Iroko is a type of hard, dense wood that is highly valued for its durability, water resistance, and stability. It is obtained from the Milicia excelsa tree , which grows in tropical regions of West Africa. Iroko wood is often used in the construction of bridges, docks, and boats because of its resistance to water and rot. It is also used in furniture, flooring, and paneling because of its beautiful appearance and interesting texture. Iroko wood has a yellow to dark brown color with a straight or slightly wavy grain that can sometimes be interrupted by knots. Due to its popularity, iroko is now an endangered species in some parts of West Africa due to overexploitation. That’s why it’s important to ensure that the iroko wood you buy is from a sustainable source. Certifications like FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) ensure that the wood comes from responsibly and sustainably managed sources. The jatoba Jatoba, also known as Brazilian cherry or courbaril, is a hard, dense wood native to Central and South America, primarily Brazil. It is often used in the construction of flooring, furniture, wall coverings, and framing due to its durability and resistance to insects and rot. Ranging in color from reddish-brown to golden brown, it often exhibits a variety of grain patterns, from straight to wavy. It has a fine, uniform texture that gives it a smooth, polished appearance when finished. It is known for its high resistance to scratches, shocks and impacts, making it a good choice for floors in high traffic areas. It is also water resistant, so it can be used in humid environments such as bathrooms and kitchens. The cherry tree Cherry is a hard, dense wood that is native to Europe, Asia, and North America . It is often used in furniture, wall coverings, flooring, and veneers because of its rich color and fine texture. Cherry wood ranges in color from light brown to reddish, with grain markings and patterns that give it a warm, natural look . Cherry wood is also known for its resistance to impact and scratches, making it suitable for use in high-traffic environments. Cherry has been a popular wood for centuries , used in traditional European furniture since medieval times. However, due to the increased demand for this wood and the dwindling natural resources, it is important to ensure that the cherry wood you purchase comes from sustainable and responsible sources.
