Become a Golf Volunteer: Experience Major Competitions from the Inside

Attending a golf tournament as a spectator is good. But experiencing it as a volunteer is a total immersion behind the scenes of the event. Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup, Olympic Games, Evian Championship… All these international competitions rely on volunteers to keep the organization running.

Why become a volunteer at a golf tournament?

Volunteering is much more than just helping on the course. It means:

  • Working half a day and enjoying the other half for free to follow the competition.

  • Receiving a welcome package: official outfits, bag, accessories, meals.

  • Getting a full pass for the duration of the tournament.

  • And most importantly: living an unforgettable human and sporting experience.

Testimonial: during the 2018 Ryder Cup in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, I was assigned to the press center. A unique immersion, with access to VIP areas. An adventure I repeated in Rome, and which I will continue with the Solheim Cup.

⚠️ Not all positions are as prestigious. Some volunteers manage parking lots or entrances, but even these missions allow you to be an integral part of the event.

How to apply to become a volunteer?

Here are the key steps to maximize your chances:

  1. Get involved locally first: clubs value profiles with previous volunteering experience.

  2. Speak English (and ideally another language): essential for international events.

  3. Anticipate: applications sometimes open 12 to 18 months before the competition.

  4. Look for official online forms: type “year + event name + volunteer application”.

    • Example: “2025 Ryder Cup volunteer application”

  5. Polish your application: past experiences, motivation, flexibility.

Which competitions recruit volunteers?

Many national and international competitions seek volunteers:

  • Ryder Cup & Solheim Cup

  • Olympic Games (general application via organizing committees)

  • The Open, PGA Championship, Evian Championship

  • European Tour, Challenge Tour tournaments

  • Grand Prix and competitions organized by clubs in France

What roles can you fill?

Tasks vary depending on the competition:

  • Public reception

  • Crowd and parking management

  • Scoring (scorekeepers, score recording)

  • Hole marshal

  • Communication, media center, logistics

👉 Tip: Mention your preference on the form, but be flexible to increase your chances.
